TEAM RACING

Team Racing is the largest discipline of sailing offered by UBSC. Sailed in Fireflies, it consists of 3 boat teams pitted against each other on short 5-10 minute courses with the aim of having as many of your boats finish in front of the other teams boats as possible, meaning its about much more than just individual boat speed.

The Club has both development and performance squads, and we encourage everyone with any dinghy sailing experience to sign up, we are not looking just for those with prior team racing experience and we value the commitment to training just as much as the skill of the sailor.

We train at Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club, a 30 minute drive south of Bristol, on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays in preparation for student run University events that occur on weekends throughout the year, as well as BUCS events, culminating in Finals over the Easter Break.

Training is mostly student led, with some coached sessions, and some training weekends with other universities outside of events. The club also offers Strength and Conditioning training for those in the performance squads.

During training sessions we use our New Fleet of Fireflies which were purchased in 2020, with first use in 2021 meaning they are pretty much brand-new and a great boat for training!

Development Squad

The goal of the development squad is to train and hone the skills of team racing with the goal of moving into a performance squad the year after. The development squads will train as frequently as possible and attend multiple sailing events over the season, notably exclusively representing Bristol at our own event 'The Bristol Brew'.

Performance Squad

The performance squads are the main teams that the club will send to competitions, consisting of up to 4 teams, all will compete in the BUCS Team Racing Qualifiers with the goal of making it straight to finals, or to test their mettle at playoffs. They will also go to most of the university sailing club run events during the year in some capacity.

Typically the 1st and 2nd teams train on Wednesdays, while the 3rd and 4th teams train on Saturdays.

However, with different teams away at events each week, this will get shuffled around, providing teams with a variety of training.

2022-2023

Last year the teams put in a great performance with all three teams entered making it through BUCS Qualifiers, with Bristol 1s making it straight to Finals, Bristol 2s and 3s making it to playoffs and the 2s then progressing to finals. Congratulations to Bristol 1s for placing 8th overall!

Bristol Brew

This is the event we host every year in the first weekend of December. It attracts approximately 18 teams from across the country (mostly the South-West region) for some high-class racing and great socials!
