YACHTING

2023/24 is set to be a fantastic year to be a Bristol Yachter. Last year saw a record breaking number of students taking to the water to relieve exam stress, learn a new skill, or perfect an old one.

Your new yachting captain has been quick to respond to the demands of the people, with a plan to include more infamous cruising weekends to the calendar than ever before!

CASUAL YACHTING

Having been gradually and carefully refined over past years, these headline events are UBYSC's piece-de-resistance, and follow a rough three day plan of Solent 'cruising' a night out in the gorgeous town of Cowes, Isle of Wight, and a revelrous curry social thrown in for good measure.

Over half our crews last year had no prior sailing experience, and when Bristol Yachting illuminated a world- which to them was previously only a distant fantasy- they caught the bug and just kept coming back!

Serious yacht racers are often considered a smaller university demographic than the likes of Rugby, Hockey and Dinghy Sailing. But they are by no means a less tenacious bunch than their sporting counterparts. With the coveted BUCS Yachting Nationals returning in April 2024, we're hoping to build off our success from last year by assembling a well-oiled Bristol Uni machine. This machine will take on universities from around the country in a week-long regatta. It's a great chance to prove your worth amongst some of the most promising youth yachters on the circuit

MATCH RACING

Have you ever watched the America's Cup? That's match racing!

One boat against one, after intense pre-start manoeuvering the boats (normally small keelboats) race around a short windward-leeward course, penalties being handed out by on-the-water umpires. You can even delay your penalty and take it later or try and give your opponent a penalty to offset them which makes match racing unique and creates really exciting racing that is never over until you cross the finish line.

Bristol achieved 2nd place in the 2023 BUCS Match Racing Championship! This year we will be aiming to re-claim the title and compete in lots of other events throughout the year so there will be plenty of chances to get involved.
