The Oxford Magnum

The Oxford Magnum is one of the hardest events on the University Calendar, especially for one of the very early events. This meant that only the 1s and 2s competed.

After not doing as well as hoped in Cardiff, there was a lot to make up for at this event. However, just like Cardiff the wind was going to be a difficult factor.

After waiting for many hours on the Saturday for just a breath of wind, the racing finally

commenced. The racing was tough as the majority of teams were alumni teams, including the team racing world champions, the West Kirby Hawks. Unfortunately, only 20 races were completed on day one as there just wasn’t enough wind.

On arrival, Sunday looked as if it was going to be much of the same. Thick fog and no wind did not seem promising. However, at around 12.30 the fog cleared and a strong breeze of around 12 knots filled in. The races were much better and closer as the wind was enough for lots of team racing moves.

In the end, only 80 races were completed, but it was a lot of fun and both teams had greatly improved from the week before. It was fair to say that they had redeemed themselves.
