Varsity Day!

Today, the sailing club took part in their first ever varsity match, against the University of the West of England. Leading into Varsity Day, Bristol were quite a few points behind UWE and so we knew a win would really help our position. The wind was not looking great but after much discussion we decided to race. The format was to do a fleet race with everyone on one start and take the positions of the top 3 from each team. Bristol were sailing in fireflies and fevas, while UWE were also in fireflies but with a laser, solo and an RS 200.

Once all the boats had managed to drift out to the start line, we began race one. Bristol raced straight into a convincing lead with Cam Douglas and Charlie Makepeace, in their fireflies leading the pack. After one lap the race was shortened and finished. Bristol finished with a very convincing win, with 3 fireflies beating all of the UWE boats.

Unfortunately, for UWE race two was almost exactly the same as the last, with Bristol taking 1,2,3 and cementing the overall win.

This was a great result for the sailing club and Bristol as a whole. With all of the other results of the day, Bristol managed to turn the result around and win in a convincing style, 21-16!
